BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio – The Belmont County Commissioners recognized October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month at their weekly Wednesday meeting.

Gabby Timko, the new Director of Nursing at the Belmont County Health Department, said breast cancer affects both men and women and stressed the importance of awareness and preventative health care.

Timko said keeping a healthy weight, exercising and avoiding alcohol are helpful in preventing breast cancer. She added that it’s important to understand your family history and be tested for any inherited gene mutations. Timko said women should begin breast cancer screenings and mammograms at age 40 or at age 35 if they have risk factors.

Commissioner Josh Meyer shared that his own mother was a breast cancer survivor and stressed the importance of early detection and seeing a doctor if you have any suspicions or concerns about your health.
