NEW CONCORD, Ohio – Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz says there was no active shooter on the campus of Muskingum University on Monday.
Lutz posted a statement on the department’s Facebook page Tuesday morning.
Law enforcement responded to Muskingum University on Monday evening after reports of an active shooter, but an investigation found no evidence of a shooting.
A shelter-in-place order was lifted before 9 p.m.
The confusion stemmed from a domestic dispute earlier in the day, which was misreported—partly due to social media—after a staff member overheard a conversation and reported it. Authorities confirmed there was an overreaction caused by a misunderstanding.
The incident remains under investigation.
