West Virgina man accused of killing a cat over reported urine smell enters plea agreement

CHESTER, W.Va. — A Chester man accused of felony animal cruelty has entered a plea agreement, though the court has deferred its acceptance for 18 months, contingent upon his compliance with strict conditions.

The case stems from an incident last summer when a couple noticed a distressed cat outside Greg Arner’s home. According to reports, Arner allegedly admitted to killing the cat out of frustration, claiming he was tired of smelling cat urine. This led to his arrest and a charge of felony animal cruelty.

In court, Arner entered a plea, but Judge Michael Olejasz opted to delay its acceptance. Under West Virginia law, such deferrals allow for a probationary period during which the defendant must adhere to specific conditions.

During the 18-month period, Arner must avoid any criminal activity and is prohibited from owning or possessing animals. If he successfully complies, the felony plea will be reduced to a misdemeanor animal cruelty charge. Regardless of the final conviction, Arner will be barred from owning or possessing any animals for five years following sentencing.

The court’s final decision hinges on Arner’s conduct over the next year and a half.

Arner had no prior criminal history.
