Three people injured in dramatic crash as car plunges off I-70 overpass and into creek below

WHEELING, W.Va. – At approximately 5:40 p.m. on Thursday, Wheeling police and fire crews responded to a dramatic accident involving a vehicle driving off the I-70 overpass and plunging into a creek beneath the highway.

Wheeling Police Department Public Information Officer Philip Stahl says the single-vehicle incident began on Interstate 70 near Exit 1B. A westbound car left the roadway, entering the median before plunging down a hill into Big Wheeling Creek.

Freeing the entrapped people in the vehicle took a prolonged period, but eventually paramedics took the three injured to Wheeling Hospital for treatment.

The Wheeling Police Department is investigating the cause of the crash. Responders at the scene included Wheeling Fire, Bethlehem Fire, WV State Police, and Ohio County EMS/EMA.
