COLUMBUS, Ohio – An investigation by the Ohio Inspector General found that a temporary employee of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) allegedly released $565,949 in pandemic assistance payments, “improperly,” through the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) program.
According to a release from the Inspector General’s office, the investigation stemmed from an August 19, 2021, referral from ODJFS regarding Renita Carr, an intermittent Customer Service Representative (CSR). The referral alleged that Carr engaged in unauthorized actions in claims processing, leading to the improper release of unemployment assistance benefits.
Investigators discovered that Carr had reportedly previously worked for Insight Global, LLC, as a customer service representative handling PUA claims before her employment with ODJFS. In both roles, she allegedly exceeded the scope of her training and authority, affecting 28 PUA claims and resulting in the improper release of benefits totaling $565,949.
The investigation further revealed that Carr had allegedly searched for specific PUA claimants, accessed their claims, voided fraud and eligibility issues, and removed fact-finding information. Additionally, five of the claims reportedly involved individuals who were either relatives or acquaintances of Carr.
The Ohio Inspector General’s office has referred the findings of the investigation to the Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and the Ohio Auditor of State for further action. The case now awaits potential legal proceedings.
