You Got Their Attention: Ohio AG Warns Voter-Led Push Could Abolish Property Taxes if Lawmakers Fail to Act

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Your leaders in Ohio are finally listening to you about high property taxes with Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost’s warning to officials that if they don’t fix the problem, Ohioans will.

But listening and action are two different things. You can learn more about the drive to add a constitutional amendment to eliminate property taxes in the Buckeye State and where to sign the petition by clicking here.

A growing wave of frustration over rising property taxes in Ohio has reached a boiling point, and state leaders are feeling the heat.

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost issued a sharp warning this week, saying voters may soon take matters into their own hands and abolish property taxes altogether through a constitutional amendment unless lawmakers and county leaders take immediate steps to reform the system.

Yost said Wednesday while speaking to the Ohio Council of County Officials that high property taxes are forcing Ohioans out the homes they worked their whole lives for.

Yost’s remarks come as the Ohio House confirms it will return to session Monday, July 21, to consider veto overrides on three property-tax-related items.

Citing data from his office, Yost highlighted a staggering 18.9% increase in property taxes statewide from 2020 to 2024, totaling $3.8 billion in additional tax burden — much of it falling on homeowners and agricultural property owners.

Yost, a Republican, urged county officials to work proactively with state lawmakers to develop a comprehensive reform plan that stabilizes property values and provides relief without gutting essential services.

Grassroots groups have already begun circulating petitions and building support for such an amendment, which would effectively ban property taxes and force state and local governments to reimagine how public schools, infrastructure, and emergency services are funded.

River News Network is working with Ax Ohio Tax and has set up petition signing stations in Belmont and Jefferson Counties. You can sign the petition in Bellaire or Steubenville. Petition signing times are 3 p.m. till 5 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday & Friday at both locations.  Belmont County (Bellaire) location is Big Willie/WOMP studios at 56325 High Ridge Rd., Bellaire.  Jefferson County (Steubenville) location is inside Fort Steuben Mall from the Walmart entrance.
