With the extreme conditions expected, officials are urging residents to take precautions:

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink two to four cups of water every hour when working or exercising outdoors. Do not wait until you’re thirsty to start drinking water. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, which can dehydrate you and increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.
  • Limit Outdoor Activity: If possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
  • Dress Appropriately: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing. A wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen can also help protect you from the sun.
  • Never Leave Pets or Children in Cars: Temperatures inside vehicles can rise by nearly 20 degrees in just 10 minutes—even with the windows cracked. Always check the back seat.
  • Protect Outdoor Animals: Make sure pets have plenty of fresh water and access to shaded areas to cool off.
