DAYTON, OH – A 46-year-old man from Yonkers, NY, is dead after a frightening encounter with loose dogs ended in a fatal crash late Friday night in Bethel Township.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Springfield Post, the incident happened around 9:35 p.m. on Lower Valley Pike near Cloverdale Road. Investigators say Jason Caponera was walking along the shoulder when two dogs from a nearby property ran across the street and jumped on him.

In an attempt to get away, Caponera moved toward the road — directly into the path of a silver 2014 Chevrolet Cruze traveling northeast. The car struck both Caponera and one of the dogs.

Troopers report the driver was not injured. The dog sustained only a minor injury.

Authorities continue to piece together the circumstances leading up to the encounter. Was this an unforeseeable accident — or could it have been prevented?
