Authorities Identify One Victim in Clairton, Pa. Coke Works Explosion

CLAIRTON, Pa. — The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office has released the name of one of two workers killed in an industrial accident Monday at U.S. Steel’s Clairton Coke Works near Pittsburgh.

Timothy Quinn, 39, a father of three and second generation steelworker, died in the incident, officials said Tuesday. The family of the second worker who was killed asked that his name not be made public.

At least 10 others were injured and taken to nearby hospitals. Their ages ranged from 27 to 74, with many listed in critical but stable condition.

On Monday, August 11, multiple explosions occurred at the coke works in Clairton, North America’s largest coke-producing facility near Pittsburgh. The incident happened just before 11 a.m. in the area housing coke oven batteries 13 and 14 where workers were prepping for routine maintenance.

The plant was largely stabilized by Monday afternoon, with the core facility still operational despite damage to the affected batteries. Authorities initially warned residents within one mile to shelter in place, though air quality tests later showed no readings above federal standards, and the warning was lifted by evening.
