Today is the day to celebrate your dog!
National Dog Day, also known as International Dog Day, falls every year on August 26, the date Colleen Paige—animal welfare advocate and pet lifestyle expert—adopted her first dog, “Sheltie,” from a shelter at age ten.
Since its inception in 2004, the day has become a global movement, advocated by rescue organizations and lawmakers alike to spotlight dog adoption and the contributions dogs make to society
National Dog Day serves as more than just a day to treat your own dog to something special like a long walk or a new toy. You can also also help other dogs in the following ways:
- Encourage adoption from shelters and rescue organizations
- Celebrate dogs across all breeds and purposes—from loyal family pets to service and working dogs
- Elevate public awareness of responsible pet ownership, welfare, and legislative support for dogs in need
