St. Clairsville Police Department Opens New Headquarters Near High School

ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio — The St. Clairsville Police Department officially moved into its new headquarters at 131 South Sugar Street near the high school Friday morning, with Police Chief Matt Arbenz and Mayor Kathryn Thalman hosting a ceremony.

Chief Arbenz surprised Mayor Thalman by dedicating the new police station to her and her service to the city of St. Clairsville.

Three years ago, Thalman said city leaders recognized the need for a larger, modern facility after a major drug seizure highlighted the cramped conditions at the former station. Working closely with city staff, council members, and the Ohio Department of Public Works, officials navigated budget constraints, property restrictions, and other challenges to make the project a reality.

The renovated building, which formerly housed a machine shop, was in rough condition when the city acquired it but after a complete overhaul, it is modernized to accommodate police operations, improve security and better serve the community. The project involved collaboration among multiple city departments, community volunteers, and local donors, including an Eagle Scout who installed a flagpole outside the facility.

A notable feature of the new headquarters is a round, illuminated police sign outside the door that glows in a style similar to the one used by the Barnesville Police Department.

Chief Arbenz reminded residents that for police assistance, they should call 911 or the department’s main number at 740-695-0123.
