WINTERSVILLE, Ohio — Students in the Indian Creek School District will soon enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables during the school day thanks to a $45,000 grant aimed at improving childhood nutrition.
Nicole Marshall, the district’s food service director with Nutrition Inc., announced that Indian Creek Schools secured funding through the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP). The initiative is provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and administered through the Ohio Department of Education.
The grant will provide preschool through fourth grade students with free servings of fruits and vegetables while also incorporating nutrition curriculum and learning materials.
Marshall said, “I’m super excited about our program. I’m excited for all it can do for Indian Creek and the kids.”
The one-year grant also created two new staff positions to help run the program with funding expected to begin in October. Students will also receive instruction on healthy eating from both a cafeteria worker and a classroom teacher.
The grant is for one year and Marshall hopes to reapply annually and perhaps expand the services.
