Counties across Ohio are weighing whether to provide property tax relief to homeowners as property values — and tax bills — continue to rise.
In Butler County, commissioners say they are ready to act because, as Commissioner Don Dixon put it, “It’s obvious the state’s not going to do anything.” Butler County leaders are considering options ranging from doubling Homestead and owner-occupancy credits to rolling back inside millage, with potential savings for homeowners in the hundreds of dollars. Other counties, including Erie and Summit, are also exploring relief measures.
But here in Belmont County, the commissioners have not yet commented on whether they will pursue similar property tax relief. River News has made repeated requests for comment, but as of today, no response has been provided.
Meanwhile, local residents who want to take action themselves can sign the statewide petition drive seeking a constitutional amendment on property taxes. The River Network is gathering signatures every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 3200 Guernsey Street in Bellaire, Ohio, inside the old post office building.
As the September 30 deadline approaches for Governor Mike DeWine’s property tax working group to deliver recommendations, commissioners across the state are signaling action at the local level. Belmont County residents, however, are still waiting to hear if relief could be on the way locally.
