WELLSBURG, W.Va. – Wellsburg Mayor Dan Dudley is facing public criticism after a social media post in which he described assassinated activist Charlie Kirk as “a racist.”

Dudley’s post read, in part, “Sad day in America. Flying an American flag half-mast for a racist. Priceless.” The post has sparked controversy in the community, prompting some residents to start a petition calling for Dudley’s resignation.

West Virginia Delegate Jimmy Willis (R-Brooke and Ohio Counties) expressed support for the petition and shared it on social media.

In addition, a local group held a protest in Wellsburg Saturday, to express their opposition to the mayor’s remarks.

Despite the backlash, Dudley says he stands by his comments and confirmed he has no plans to step down, stating he will remain in office.
