BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio — September marks International Underground Railroad Month, and Ohio tourism officials are encouraging travelers to explore the state’s historic role in the fight for freedom.
The Ohio Historical Underground Railroad Trail features 48 stops across the state, each tied to the secret network of routes and safe houses that helped enslaved people escape to freedom before and during the Civil War.
One key site is the Underground Railroad Museum – Ohio Valley in Flushing. The museum houses a vast collection of artifacts, documents, and exhibits that showcase not only the Underground Railroad but also the culture of the era. The museum is preparing for a major move to the Black Horse Inn in historic Morristown, with completion expected within the next year.
State tourism leaders say the trail offers visitors a chance to walk in the footsteps of history while honoring the bravery of freedom seekers and those who aided them.
