Local Officials Join Call to Keep Truck Weight Limits Unchanged

WASHINGTON, D.C. — More than 2,200 elected public officials from across the country — including some from the Ohio Valley — have signed a letter urging Congress to maintain current federal truck weight limits as lawmakers debate a new highway bill.

Among those signing the letter was Ron Kleineke, Jefferson County Commissioner, who joined colleagues nationwide in voicing concerns over proposals to increase maximum truck weights from the current 80,000 pounds to as much as 156,000 pounds.

Supporters of the letter say heavier trucks could pose significant risks to road and bridge safety, particularly in rural communities with aging infrastructure. They also point to higher maintenance costs for local governments already struggling to keep up with repairs.

The letter was sent to lawmakers in both the U.S. House and Senate as transportation committees consider provisions for the upcoming highway legislation.

Commissioners and municipal leaders who signed on emphasized that keeping weight limits stable is essential for protecting public safety, controlling taxpayer costs, and preserving roadways.

Congress is expected to continue debating the measure through the fall.
