COLUMBUS, Ohio — New language is set to appear on Ohio levy ballots for the 2020–2026 elections, requiring local government entities to disclose their financial reserves.
Under the changes, levies will need to show carryover balances both in dollars and as a percentage of annual operating costs, giving voters a clearer picture of local government savings before approving new taxes.
The revisions come as a result of veto overrides and increased public scrutiny over property tax transparency. Advocates say the changes will help voters make more informed decisions about levies and local government spending.
The updates coincide with efforts by public interest group Ax Ohio Tax, which is actively campaigning to abolish property taxes across the state.
State officials say the new ballot language will be implemented in time for the next cycle of elections and is part of broader reforms aimed at improving transparency and accountability in local government finance.
