Belmont County, Ohio — A horse spotted running along Interstate 70 in Belmont County Thursday morning caused quite a stir before being safely rescued by law enforcement and animal welfare volunteers.
According to authorities, the bay mare — believed to be a quarter horse — ran nearly four miles starting near Exit 208 before being secured by the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Belmont County Sheriff’s Office, and members of Belmont County Hoof and Paw with help from several drivers who stopped to assist.
Humane Agent Julie Larish of Belmont County Hoof and Paw said the horse appeared healthy and well cared for, leading rescuers to believe it may have accidentally escaped rather than been abandoned. “We’ve reached out to everyone we know in the local horse community, but no one has claimed her yet,” Larish said. “We’re hoping someone recognizes the horse and can provide proof of ownership.”
Larish later received a call from a witness who reported seeing the horse break free from a parked trailer. “The caller said the horse was kicking inside the trailer. When someone opened the door, it hit a man and knocked him down. The horse bolted out and took off toward the interstate,” Larish explained. The witness said they later saw what appeared to be the same truck and trailer traveling west on I-70 — this time without the horse.
Officials say it’s still unclear exactly how the animal ended up loose on the highway, but the mare is now safe, calm, and being cared for at Belmont County Hoof and Paw.
Larish urged the owner to come forward or contact her if they no longer wish to keep the horse. “If this is your horse and you want to surrender it, please call me so we can properly place the horse,” she said.
Anyone with information or who recognizes the animal is asked to contact Belmont County Hoof and Paw at (610) 314-5203.
