WHEELING, W.Va. – Wheeling officials have set a firm date to close the city’s exempted homeless camp, less than a day after City Council directed City Manager Bob Herron to shut it down. A notice posted Wednesday states the site will close on December 1.

The decision comes amid ongoing debate over available shelter space in the city. Local service agency leaders argue the Council’s claim that there are sufficient alternatives is misleading, noting that many residents of the camp struggle with addiction and mental health challenges.

As the closure date approaches, city leaders and social service providers face mounting pressure to ensure that affected individuals have access to safe and supportive housing.
