HANCOCK COUNTY, W.Va. – The Hancock County Board of Education voted to join a class action lawsuit against several major technology companies, alleging that their social media platforms were intentionally designed to be addictive and have caused harm to students.
The lawsuit claims that companies such as Meta, TikTok, Snapchat, and YouTube have contributed to rising mental health issues among youth by creating products that exploit children’s attention and behavior.
Brooke County’s Board of Education discussed the same lawsuit but chose to table any action until its November 17 meeting. Brooke Superintendent Jeffrey Crook said he will provide additional details about the case before the board makes a decision.
