MONROE COUNTY, Ohio – The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents to a phone scam in which callers falsely claim to be a Sergeant from the department. According to reports, the scammer tells victims that a warrant has been issued for their arrest due to a missed court date—and that they can avoid arrest by paying over the phone.
Officials stress that law enforcement agencies never call individuals to collect fines or demand payment to avoid arrest.
Residents who receive such a call are urged to hang up immediately and report it to Monroe County Dispatch at 740-472-1612, ext. 2.
Sheriff Derek Norman said the department wants the public to stay alert and avoid becoming victims of this fraudulent scheme.
