Stephen G. Sheetz, former President and CEO of Sheetz Inc., has died at the age of 77.

The company says Sheetz died on the evening of January 4 at UPMC in Altoona. No cause of death was released.

Sheetz began working at the family business in Altoona at age 12 and earned a degree from Penn State University in 1969. He rose through the company’s ranks, becoming President and CEO in 1984 after the retirement of his brother, Bob Sheetz.

During his tenure from 1984 to 1995, Sheetz led significant expansion, including the introduction of made-to-order food, the sale of gasoline, and growth into new states. He later served as Chairman of the Board from 1995 to 2013 and remained involved with the company in leadership roles until his retirement in 2020.

Beyond business, Sheetz was known for his philanthropic efforts, particularly in central Pennsylvania. He and his wife, Nancy, founded the Sheetz Fellows Program and helped establish the Sheetz Center for Entrepreneurial Excellence in Altoona.

Sheetz is survived by his wife, two daughters, and seven grandchildren.
