Ohio Attorney General Rejects Summary Language for Cannabis Repeal Referendum

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost has rejected the summary language for a proposed referendum that seeks to repeal Senate Bill 56, the law governing recreational cannabis use in the state.

Yost said the language submitted for the referendum contains omissions and misstatements, preventing it from being certified for circulation. Under Ohio law, the attorney general must approve the summary language before petitioners can begin collecting signatures.

The proposed referendum aims to overturn Senate Bill 56, which sets the regulatory framework for adult-use cannabis in Ohio. Yost’s decision does not block the referendum effort outright but requires supporters to revise and resubmit the summary language for review.

No timeline has been announced for when a revised version may be resubmitted.
