Hancock County Schools Under State Oversight After Leadership Removed

HANCOCK COUNTY, W.Va. — Hancock County Schools is now being led by an interim administrator under close supervision from the West Virginia Department of Education following the removal of the district’s top leadership.

Walter Saunders, the former Ohio County Schools director of federal programs and assessment, has been appointed to oversee Hancock County Schools. His appointment comes after the state Board of Education replaced Superintendent Dan Enich and his administrative team Friday afternoon.

State education officials cited serious concerns with district leadership, describing the conduct of the local administration as “total malfeasance.”

According to the West Virginia Department of Education, the move places the county under direct state control while officials work to stabilize operations and address ongoing issues within the school system. Saunders will manage day-to-day operations while reporting directly to the state.
