Governor DeWine Urges Precautions as Extreme Cold Grips Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Governor Mike DeWine is urging Ohioans to take precautions as an Arctic air mass brings dangerously cold temperatures across the state.

The Ohio Emergency Management Agency says wind chills could drop to 20 to 25 degrees below zero through Tuesday, with below-normal temperatures expected to persist into early February. While heavy snowfall has ended, officials warn the extreme cold poses ongoing risks.

State agencies are encouraging residents to limit travel, check on older adults and vulnerable neighbors, and practice fire safety when using alternative heat sources. Drivers who must travel are urged to prepare vehicles for winter conditions and carry emergency supplies.

Health officials also warn against overexertion while clearing snow and ice and remind Ohioans to watch for signs of hypothermia, frostbite, and heart attack. Residents are advised to dress in layers, stay indoors when possible, and seek medical help immediately if cold-related symptoms appear.
