Capito Pushes Sanctuary City Concessions as DeWine Prepares for Immigration Enforcement Surge

WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Shelly Moore Capito said Thursday that Democrats must make concessions on policies involving so-called sanctuary cities in order to pass a federal spending bill and avoid another government shutdown.

Capito’s remarks come as Ohio Governor Mike DeWine said the state is preparing for increased federal immigration enforcement activity after Feb. 3, when temporary protected status for Haitian nationals is set to expire.

DeWine said Ohio officials are coordinating with federal authorities and expects immigration enforcement actions, including potential operations in communities such as Springfield, to follow state and local law enforcement protocols.

Congress continues negotiations over a federal spending plan as lawmakers work to prevent a shutdown while debating immigration and border enforcement policies.
