CLEVELAND, Ohio — One of the nation’s largest road salt producers says early-season winter storms have sharply increased demand, keeping crews working extended hours to keep supplies moving.
Cargill, which mines road salt beneath Lake Erie, reports it has sufficient salt reserves but faces challenges extracting and delivering it quickly enough to meet surging orders.
Company officials say workers are operating on 12-hour shifts, seven days a week, as municipalities continue replenishing salt supplies amid ongoing winter weather across the region.
