WHEELING, W.Va. — The Wheeling Fire Department has announced that testing for probationary firefighters will be held on March 4, 2026. Interested candidates must apply online no later than February 27, 2026, on the City of Wheeling’s website.
To be eligible, applicants must be between 18 and 35 years of age at the time of testing; however, individuals with qualifying veteran status may be eligible up to 40 years of age with the submission of a DD-214 form. A valid driver’s license is required for all applicants. While a high school diploma or GED is not required to take the test, candidates must possess a diploma or equivalent to be hired. Additionally, applicants must be able to establish residency within 20 air miles of the City-County Building, located at 1500 Chapline Street, within one year of employment.
Prior to the test, two career open houses are scheduled this month for those interested in becoming Wheeling firefighters. The first will take place at 6 p.m., Tuesday, February 17, and the second at noon, Saturday, February 21. Interested participants should meet at Fire Headquarters, located at 1700 Wood Street, where they will have the opportunity to speak with firefighters, learn about and practice the physical agility test, and tour the department.
Prospective candidates are encouraged to carefully review all testing requirements and confirm they meet eligibility criteria before applying.
Additional information, resources, and the online application are available on the City of Wheeling’s fire employment page at wheelingwv.gov/firejobs or by calling 304-234-3694.
