Ohio Tornado Count Hits 10 Following Weekend Touchdown

The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado touched down in Defiance this past Saturday, bringing Ohio’s 2026 storm total to 10 touchdowns so far this year.

This early activity follows a relatively moderate 2025, during which the state recorded 28 confirmed tornadoes. However, current trends remain far below the unprecedented pace of 2024, which set a state record with a total of 74 tornadoes.

Locally in Belmont County and the Ohio Valley, recent high winds have caused property damage, power outages, and uprooted trees.

Meteorologists note that while the current count of 10 is significant, it aligns with a general increase in volatile spring weather. On average, Ohio typically sees 23 tornadoes over the course of an entire year.

With the peak of the severe weather season still ahead, officials are urging residents to remain vigilant and review their emergency plans. The recent confirmation in Defiance serves as a reminder of how quickly these systems can develop, even in years that do not reach the record-breaking levels seen two years ago.
