ODOT Awards Belmont County $1.6M for New EV Charging Station, One of 64 Planned Across Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is announcing 64 future electric vehicle (EV) charging station locations, including a $1.6 millon project in Belmont County at I-70 and Belmont Morristown Road, selected in its latest round of National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program implementation.

The new Belmont County EV charging station will be located at at Love’s Travel Stops located off 1-70 exit 208 at 66320 Belmont Morristown Road, Belmont, OH 43718.

The NEVI award for the Belmont County EV charging station is $807,637, with a private match of $874,940, bringing the total project cost to $1,682,578.

ODOT will award $51 million to selected developers to install and operate the new stations, which will be located at businesses across the state. The new one slated for Belmont County is the only new station added in southeastern Ohio, although other ones were previously installed. There is already one across Belmont Morristown Road from Love’s Travel Stops at the Pilot Travel Center.

The $51 million in NEVI funding will be matched with more than $26 million from the private developers selected, including Aldi, BP Products North America, Francis Energy Charging, Heartland Charging Service, Love’s Travel Stops, Mid Cour EV Charging Solutions, Pilot Travel Centers, Red E Charging, Sheetz, Tesla, and United Dairy Farmers. Winning proposals include the addition of chargers at existing travel centers, grocery stores, retail centers, and convenience stores.

“Every dollar invested in Ohio strengthens economic opportunity, from construction to long-term operation,” said ODOT Director Pamela Boratyn. “Backed by Ohio’s strong automotive and manufacturing sector, these projects position our communities to compete and grow for decades to come while expanding transportation options for Ohioans.”

The next round of sites will include at least four charger ports with 150 kilowatts of power for each port with access to common amenities, such as restrooms and food. Construction is expected to begin early next year with many of the sites anticipated to open by the end of 2027.

Ohio was an early leader in the NEVI program as it was the first state in the nation to announce locations and begin construction on EV fast-charging stations. In late 2023, Ohio cut the ribbon on the first NEVI station in the country. As of today, 19 NEVI stations are operational in Ohio, with 12 more locations set to be constructed this year.

Ohio reached another critical milestone last fall when the Federal Highway Administration certified the state’s determination of fully built out status, meaning Ohio’s charging network along alternative fuel corridors provides certainty that reliable charging will be available during travel. This status gave Ohio increased flexibility for this round of funding, allowing proposed locations to extend beyond designated corridors.

There are currently 126,212 registered electric vehicles in Ohio, with that number growing each year. In September 2025, EV adoption in Ohio hit 5 percent for the first time, which means 5 percent of all new vehicles registered in the state were electric.
