Voters across West Virginia made their choices in Tuesday’s primary election, with several statewide and regional races decided.

In the race for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate, incumbent Shelley Moore Capito easily secured the GOP candidacy, defeating five challengers. Incumbent Republican U.S. Representative Riley Moore ran unopposed.

Two seats on the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia were also decided. H.L. “Hank” Kirkpatrick won election to fill the remainder of an unexpired term that runs through 2032.

Meanwhile, Bill Flanagan of Wheeling captured the other open seat on the court. That term will expire in 2028.

Candidates backed by Patrick Morrisey were successful in state Senate races. Incumbent Laura Wakim-Chapman won in the 1st District, while Toby Heaney claimed victory in the 2nd District.

In House of Delegates contests, Don Dewitt defeated incumbent Jeff Stephens in the 6th District race. In the 2nd District, Tony Viola unseated incumbent Mark Zatezalo.

Voters also approved local levy issues. A levy supporting the animal shelter in Hancock County passed, along with a school renewal levy in Wetzel County.
