WHEELING, W.Va. — City officials are reminding residents that fats, oils, and grease — commonly referred to as FOG — are one of the leading causes of sewer system blockages.
FOG comes from everyday household items such as meats, dairy products, salad dressings, gravy, butter, cheese, and other food byproducts. When these substances are poured down sinks and drains, they can cool and harden inside pipes, restricting flow and leading to costly backups and overflows.
The City of Wheeling Water Pollution Control Division (WPCD) says proper disposal is key to preventing these issues. Residents are encouraged to allow grease to cool, then dispose of it in the trash rather than washing it down the drain.
Officials also recommend wiping cookware and plates before washing to reduce the amount of grease entering the sewer system.
City leaders say small actions at home can help protect infrastructure, reduce maintenance costs, and keep local waterways cleaner.
