Fraud involving state assistance programs has come under increased scrutiny in recent months in Ohio.
Ohio State Senator Tim Schaffer recently appeared on the Senate President’s podcast to discuss findings from ongoing investigations and explain new measures being implemented for the use of SNAP EBT cards.
Schaffer said investigators uncovered cases involving misuse of benefits and organized fraud schemes targeting the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as SNAP.
In response, state lawmakers and officials are supporting additional security measures aimed at protecting recipients and reducing fraudulent activity. Those efforts include tighter oversight of EBT card transactions and enhanced safeguards designed to prevent theft and unauthorized use.
Officials say electronic benefit theft, including card “skimming” scams, has become a growing concern nationwide. Lawmakers say protecting taxpayer dollars while ensuring benefits reach families who need assistance remains a top priority.
Schaffer said the state will continue reviewing the program and considering additional reforms as investigations move forward.
