State Route 149 Closure Scheduled in Harrison County for Culvert Replacement Project

NEW ATHENS, Ohio — A significant road closure is scheduled to begin next month in Harrison County as part of a culvert replacement project impacting a key local route.

The Ohio Department of Transportation announced that State Route 149 will close beginning June 8 just south of the SR 149 and SR 9 intersection in New Athens.

Officials say the closure is necessary to allow crews to complete a culvert replacement project aimed at improving roadway safety and long-term infrastructure reliability in the area.

The closure is expected to remain in place for approximately 21 days, though the overall project timeline is scheduled for completion by September 30, 2026.

During the closure, drivers will be rerouted using an official detour that directs traffic from SR 331 west to U.S. 22 east, then to SR 519 east, and onward to SR 9 south before reconnecting with SR 149.

Transportation officials are urging motorists to plan ahead, allow for additional travel time, and use caution when traveling near construction zones.

Other affected routes include State Route 9, State Route 331, U.S. Route 22, and State Route 519, which will see increased traffic as drivers follow detour patterns.

Officials say updates will be provided as the project progresses, and drivers are encouraged to stay alert for additional traffic advisories throughout the Ohio Valley region.
