WHEELING, W.Va. — Wheeling Post 1 of the American Legion has been selected as a recipient of the prestigious National Emergency Fund (NEF) Excellence Award for 2025, recognizing the post’s outstanding commitment to helping veterans, families, and communities during times of emergency and hardship.
According to officials, only three American Legion posts nationwide received the distinction this year, with the other two award-winning posts located in Texas.
Each year, American Legion Departments across the country submit nominations highlighting local posts that have gone above and beyond in emergency assistance, disaster relief, and community service efforts. Wheeling Post 1 was informed it had been selected for the honor following the national review process.
Representatives from Wheeling Post 1 will travel to Louisville, Kentucky, to officially receive the award during a national American Legion event.
Local veterans and community leaders say the recognition reflects the long-standing dedication of Wheeling Post 1 members who continuously support fellow veterans and residents throughout the Ohio Valley.
The National Emergency Fund helps provide immediate assistance to Legionnaires and families impacted by natural disasters and other emergencies, while also recognizing posts demonstrating exceptional service and leadership in their communities.
