WHEELING, W.Va. — A little friendly competition, plenty of chili, and a great cause brought the community together Saturday for the first annual Chili Cook-Off hosted by Wheeling Helping Hands and the Wheeling Police Unity Foundation.

The event featured 14 chili entries from local organizations, first responders, community members, and businesses, all competing for top honors while raising support for community assistance programs throughout the Ohio Valley.

Attendees sampled a wide variety of recipes ranging from traditional chili to unique specialty creations, making for a difficult decision among judges and guests.

When the votes were counted, the Wheeling Fire Department earned both the Grand Champion Award and the People’s Choice Award, taking home bragging rights for the inaugural event.

Organizers said the cook-off was about more than competition. The event helped strengthen relationships between local first responders and the community while generating support for programs that assist residents throughout the year.

Volunteers, sponsors, judges, and participants were recognized for helping make the event a success, with organizers already looking forward to bringing the cook-off back next year
