WHEELING, W.Va. — Wheeling University officially launched a major improvement project at Bishop Schmitt Field on Tuesday, beginning a multi-phase renovation effort aimed at upgrading the school’s athletic facilities.
University leaders, community members, donors and supporters gathered at the stadium for a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the start of construction.
The project is being funded in part through significant contributions from local partners, including Panhandle Cleaning and Restoration and WesBanco, which each donated $500,000 toward the stadium upgrades.
Work will take place in several phases, with the initial stage focused on replacing the field’s artificial turf surface. University officials expect that portion of the project to be finished before the OVAC All-Star Football Camp takes place next month.
Additional improvements planned for future phases include upgrades to the track and the installation of a new video scoreboard.
Supporters of the project say the renovations will benefit both the university and the surrounding community by helping attract student-athletes and creating new opportunities for events in Wheeling.
University President Dianna Vargo said students are looking forward to seeing the transformation when they return to campus later this summer.
Officials believe the improvements will strengthen athletic recruiting efforts, enhance the overall student-athlete experience and expand the university’s ability to host competitions and community events.
Wheeling University also announced that members of the public will be able to follow the progress of the project through a livestream available on the university’s website.
