SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A 10-year-old Ohio girl is being praised as a hero after waking to find a fire burning near her younger sister’s bed and quickly alerting her family.

Fifth grader Logan DeLuca woke around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday and discovered flames near the foot of her 5-year-old sister’s bed. The fire reportedly started after a night light near the bed ignited fabric.

Rather than panic, Logan woke her younger sister and immediately went to alert her stepfather while other members of the family were still sleeping.

Her stepfather was able to remove the burning mattress from the home and throw it into the yard before the flames spread further. Logan then woke her mother, and the children were taken outside while they waited for firefighters to arrive.

Everyone in the home escaped without injury, including Logan, her 5-year-old sister and her two younger brothers, ages 2 years and 6 months.

Logan credited lessons she learned during school fire drills with helping her know how to react, recognizing that belongings could be replaced but her family could not.

Her mother, Miah Clayton, said the situation unfolded quickly and praised her daughter for taking action when the family needed her most.

“She is a hero for sure,” Clayton said.

The family’s experience also serves as a reminder of how quickly a small household item can start a fire — and how knowing what to do in an emergency can make a critical difference.
