BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio — Belmont County Sheriff James Zusack is speaking publicly following the death of a 1-year-old girl in a shooting on Buttermilk Road, calling the incident difficult for the family, first responders and the community.
Zusack addressed the case Tuesday, Aug. 4, while providing limited additional information as the investigation and court proceedings continue.
Authorities were dispatched to a residence on Buttermilk Road shortly after a 911 call was received at approximately 8:38 a.m. Friday.
When deputies and other emergency personnel arrived, they found a 1-year-old girl suffering from a gunshot wound and unresponsive. First responders attempted lifesaving measures, but officials said the child died from her injuries at the scene.
Zusack praised the deputies and emergency personnel who responded, describing the circumstances they encountered as extremely difficult.
The child’s mother, 20-year-old Autum Sky Palmer, has been charged with aggravated murder in connection with the death. She remains in the Belmont County Jail without bond. Court proceedings have indicated she is being held on suicide watch and that psychological evaluations have been ordered.
As the case receives widespread attention, Zusack also urged members of the public to consider the impact their comments can have on those involved.
He asked people discussing the case on social media to show empathy and respect for the family members who are grieving. Zusack also noted that incidents involving the death of a child can have a significant emotional impact on deputies and first responders.
The sheriff encouraged the public to allow the investigation and judicial process to move forward rather than drawing conclusions based on information circulating online.
Authorities have not released additional details surrounding the circumstances of the shooting. Zusack said information is being withheld at this stage to avoid compromising the ongoing investigation and legal proceedings.
The case remains under investigation.
