WHEELING, W.Va. — For generations, Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack has been a major entertainment destination in the Ohio Valley, attracting millions of visitors each year while continuing to evolve with new amenities and attractions.
Originally opening in 1937 as Wheeling Downs, the facility began as a thoroughbred horse racing venue before transitioning to greyhound racing. Today, it remains home to one of only two active greyhound racing tracks in the United States, preserving a unique piece of American racing history.
According to casino officials, the property welcomes more than two million visitors annually, with guests traveling from throughout West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and beyond.
“We’re a destination,” said President and General Manager Kim Florence, noting that many guests return regularly while others travel from states as far away as New York.
Over the decades, the property has undergone significant changes to meet the expectations of modern visitors. Nearly $70 million in renovations completed during the 2000s expanded and upgraded the casino’s offerings, including its hotel accommodations, gaming floor and dining options.
Today, Wheeling Island features 151 hotel rooms, a variety of slot machines and table games, multiple restaurants and entertainment options designed to appeal to both local residents and overnight guests.
Florence said the property’s continued success comes from balancing quality customer service with ongoing investments in the guest experience.
The casino also hosts special events throughout the year. Its next major event is the Mountaineer Brewfest VIP Craft Food and Beer Pairing, scheduled for Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m.
As one of Wheeling’s longest-standing entertainment destinations, Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack continues to play a significant role in the city’s tourism industry while drawing visitors from across the tri-state region.
