Motorcyclist Killed After Power Lines Fall on Motorcycle in West Virginia

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. — A motorcyclist was killed and a passenger was hospitalized after power lines fell onto them while they were attempting to turn around near a tree blocking a roadway Tuesday evening.

Deputies responded to the incident in Kanawha County around 7:58 p.m.

According to investigators, a witness reported that a man and woman were traveling on a motorcycle when they encountered a fallen tree blocking the road.

The woman got off the motorcycle while the driver attempted to turn the bike around. During the turn, power lines reportedly fell onto the driver and motorcycle, knocking them to the ground.

The passenger attempted to help the driver but was shocked by the power lines.

Authorities said the downed lines then sparked a fire, which ignited fuel from the motorcycle.

The motorcycle driver died as a result of the incident. The passenger was transported by EMS to CAMC Memorial Hospital for treatment. Her condition was not provided.

The incident remains under investigation.
