Wetzel County Schools Report Major Gains in State Assessment Scores

WETZEL COUNTY, W.Va. — Wetzel County Schools are beginning the new school year with encouraging academic results after the district reported substantial improvement on West Virginia’s General Summative Assessment.

The statewide assessment measures student performance in grades three through eight, and newly released results show several areas where Wetzel County students ranked among the strongest in West Virginia.

Third-grade math performance across the district ranked second in the state, according to Wetzel County Schools Superintendent Cassie Porter. The district’s special education math results ranked first statewide.

Porter said the results reflect significant progress throughout the school system, while highlighting particularly strong improvement at Hundred Heritage School.

Students at Hundred Heritage improved their math proficiency by 6.7 percentage points. Porter said the district typically targets about two percentage points of annual growth, making the school’s increase particularly significant.

Hundred Heritage also recorded a 3.3-point improvement in English Language Arts.

The superintendent credited students and staff for the gains and said academic improvement was seen across the district, not only at Hundred Heritage.

The West Virginia General Summative Assessment is administered to students in grades three through eight and is used to measure achievement in core academic subjects.

With a new school year underway, district leaders say the latest results provide a strong starting point as Wetzel County Schools works to continue that academic growth.
