WEIRTON, W.Va. — Charles Smith will temporarily lead the Weirton Area Water Board as the organization prepares for the retirement of its longtime utilities director.

Current director Butch Mastrantoni is scheduled to retire Oct. 16 after more than 30 years in the position. Smith will serve as interim director while the board searches for a permanent replacement.

Board members discussed the upcoming transition during a meeting Wednesday and reviewed plans for advertising the vacancy.

Applications are expected to become available within the next two weeks, with the submission period remaining open for several weeks. Officials said the search will focus on identifying candidates with the experience and qualifications necessary to manage the water system’s operations.

Mastrantoni said the job description reflects the duties and responsibilities he has handled during at least the past five years. He stressed that the board should take the time necessary to ensure qualified applicants are considered while also moving efficiently through the hiring process.

Additional information about the application process is expected to be released once the position is officially posted.
