WHEELING, W.Va. — A possible human trafficking concern involving a passenger on a Greyhound bus traveling from Pittsburgh was reported Sunday afternoon, prompting a response from law enforcement.
According to information reported at approximately 3:20 p.m. on September 13, a male passenger contacted authorities after becoming concerned that a female passenger on the bus could potentially be the victim of human trafficking.
The woman was reportedly with the bus driver when authorities arrived at the bus stop. Officers spoke with her, checked identifying information and later transported her to police headquarters, where a victim advocate was expected to meet with her. Officers continued speaking with the woman at headquarters.
At this time, River News has not independently confirmed that human trafficking occurred in connection with the incident. The circumstances surrounding the report remain unclear, and the initial concern should not be interpreted as confirmation that a crime took place.
The incident nevertheless serves as a reminder of the importance of reporting circumstances that appear concerning, particularly when someone may be vulnerable or in danger.
Human trafficking can take different forms and may not always be immediately apparent. Members of the public who observe behavior that causes them to reasonably believe someone could be in danger should contact the appropriate authorities rather than attempting to intervene themselves.
In an emergency or when someone appears to be in immediate danger, call 911.
River News will provide additional information if authorities release further details about the incident.
