STEUBENVILLE, Ohio — About two dozen automated license plate reader cameras have been documented across the Steubenville area, according to DeFlock Maps.
The crowdsourced map currently shows 24 Flock Safety cameras within the displayed area, including locations in and around Steubenville and Wintersville.
Flock cameras are automated license plate readers, also known as ALPRs. They capture license plates and vehicle information as vehicles pass the cameras. The technology can be used by law enforcement to help locate vehicles connected to investigations.
The cameras are not traditional speed or red-light cameras and are not primarily used to issue traffic tickets.
DeFlock is an open-source, volunteer-powered project that documents ALPR locations using information from contributors and OpenStreetMap. Because the map is crowdsourced, the locations should be considered known or reported cameras rather than a complete official list.
Based on the map currently displayed, approximately 24 Flock cameras are documented across the Steubenville-area view.
