OHIO VALLEY — Here are some of the top stories making headlines across the region.
Ohio lawmakers have introduced proposals that would temporarily suspend the state tax on gasoline and diesel fuel. A Senate Republican spokesman said the proposed tax holiday would save motorists an estimated $725 million. Gov. Mike DeWine’s office said it is reviewing the legislation.
The Wall That Heals, a traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., is coming to Belmont County. A motorcade carrying the memorial is scheduled to arrive at the Belmont County Fairgrounds, with free public viewing beginning Thursday. The memorial will remain open around the clock through 2 p.m. Sunday.
In Steubenville, a new mural honoring the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. is taking shape on the wall of American Legion Post 274. The project is being supported by a $15,000 grant from the Pugliese Foundation.
In Belmont County, a one-mill levy supporting disability services will remain in place through next year after the county Budget Commission considered a rollback that would have reduced funding by approximately $1.3 million beginning in 2027. Hundreds of residents gathered at the courthouse in support of keeping the levy.
Brooke High School has a permanent principal. Board members voted 4-0 Monday night to make Trey Zambito’s interim appointment permanent. Zambito had been serving in the position following the arrest of the school’s former principal.
And in New Martinsville, students from Wetzel and Tyler counties now have a local pathway into the cosmetology industry through the new Coyote Cuts program at the joint Career Technical Education Center. The program provides juniors and seniors with 1,000 hours of experience before graduation as they prepare for the state exam.
