COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio lawmakers are defending the state’s child care system while introducing House Bill 647 to boost fraud prevention. The bill would give the Ohio Attorney General authority to investigate publicly funded programs suspected of fraud and let the Ohio Department of Children and Youth suspend licenses during investigations.
It also provides $5 million over two years for improved data analytics to monitor attendance and compliance. Lawmakers said the legislation responds to public scrutiny following child care fraud allegations in Minnesota and ensures federal funding is protected.
ODCY Director Kara Wente said Ohio already reviews programs regularly and conducts random checks to ensure accountability. Supporters say the bill strengthens oversight while keeping children and families safe.
