Moundsville blaze destroys landmark building in business district, closes Jefferson Avenue

MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va. – A major fire destroyed the former Remke Furniture building at 227 Jefferson Avenue in Moundsville on Friday.

The building also housed the former Strong’s Appliance.

The fire started around 11 a.m. and by 1 p.m. flames were seen shooting from the roof.

AEP Appalachian Power cut electric service to the central district. Frontier internet services were also disrupted. Traffic was snarled in the area from Friday morning to the early afternnon.

Fire crews from both the Ohio and West Virginia sides of the Ohio River answered the call to battle the blaze.

The building’s loss will leave Moundsville with a major area to salvage in its business district.
