Belmont County Commissioners Proclaim May as Mental Health Awareness Month

BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio The Belmont County Commissioners officially recognized May as Mental Health Awareness Month during their regular meeting on Wednesday, highlighting the importance of mental health services and community support.

Lisa Ward, Executive Director of the Mental Health and Recovery Board, was present to receive the proclamation.

Mental Health Awareness Month is observed every May and focuses on educating the public about mental health conditions, promoting open conversations, advocating for access to care and highlighting supportive resources.

The Belmont County Commissioners also formally recognized the Union Local High School cheerleading team Wednesday for an extraordinary 2024–2025 season that saw the squad make school history with championship wins.

The cheerleaders secured their first-ever OVAC 3A title earlier this year at the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Cheerleading Championship. Union Local and Barnesville High School were named co-champions of the OVAC 3A cheerleading division for the 2024–2025 season. The Union Local team’s success continued when they claimed the OASSA State Championship in the Traditional Division.

The next regular meeting of the Belmont County Commissioners is Wednesday, May 14 at 10 a.m. in the Belmont County Courthouse.
