Belmont County Commissioners Recognize May as Older Americans Month with Senior Services agency

ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio The Belmont County Commissioners this week welcomed representatives from Senior Services of Belmont County to recognize May as Older Americans Month.

Lisa Kazmirski, Executive Director of Senior Services of Belmont County said the agency operates 10 staffed centers across the county plus one volunteer-staffed location. In addition to the centers, services the agency offers include home-delivered meals, recreation, medical transportation and home care contracted through local providers.

Kazmirski introduced Dorothy Burkhart, Coordinator of the St. Clairsville Senior Center, and Leeann Cook, a longtime participant known as “the voice of the center.” Burkhart highlighted the wide range of programs offered at the center, which is located in the basement annex near downtown St. Clairsville.

“We try to offer something for everyone—daily meals, fitness classes, crafts, games, shopping trips, and educational programs,” said Barkhart. “But more than that, we offer companionship. Many seniors who were once isolated have found purpose and community here.”

Cook echoed the sentiment, noting the impact the center has had on attendees. “Some seniors came here after feeling like they had nothing left to live for. Now, they come every day—laughing, participating, and making friends. It’s changed lives.”

The center’s partnership with St. Clairsville High School has become one of its most popular programs. Students and seniors engage in joint activities like trivia, karaoke, and cardio drumming. The intergenerational exchange has become a hit on both sides, with plans for more outings this summer, including a bowling trip.

The commissioners and Kazmirski praised the growing role of the center as a vibrant community hub. “Dorothy is a dynamic leader,” said Kazmirski. “Thanks to her and our wonderful staff, the St. Clairsville center has become a model for others in the county.”

In addition to internal programming, the center is active in giving back. Recent donation drives have supported local animal shelters, newborn care programs, and veterans’ organizations. “Every month, we choose a new cause,” said Cook. “It’s important for our members to feel they’re still making a difference.”

Commissioners noted that Belmont County is fortunate to have multiple active senior centers, a network that not all counties can afford. The centers receive support through public funding and local levies which residents have consistently backed. “This is a community that values its older adults,” said Commissioner J.P. Dutton. “And the seniors are paying it forward.”

Senior Services of Belmont County also organizes inter-center gatherings and county-wide events six times a year, Kazmirski said. Upcoming events include a June rodeo in partnership with local 4-H clubs which will feature animal exhibits, music, and crafts. One of the most requested activities at the senior centers is euchre and staff hopes to organize local seniors interested in playing the card game. Commissioner Vince Gianangeli agreed euchre would be popular.
